ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Objective: A unusual case of ocular toxoplasmosis with significant vitreomacular traction is reported. The patient improved significantly following pars plana vitrectomy combined with visual stimulation and occlusion therapy. Methods: The case of a 5-year-old girl with significant unilateral vision loss associated with vitreous condensation and macular traction is described. Results: Pars plana vitrectomy was carried out for vitreomacular traction release. This was followed by visual stimulation and occlusion therapy. Significant improvement was observed. Conclusion: Despite structural damage, the combination of properly indicated surgery and amblyopia management strategies allowed the achievement of maximum vision goals in this case, suggesting structural damage may be associated with functional amblyopia.

ABSTRACT

A 46-year-old woman complained of blurred and distorted vision in both eyes. Ophthalmic examination showed that visual acuity was 20/200 for the right eye and counting fingers left eye. Fundoscopy revealed perimacular hemorrhages, aneurismal dilatation of the vessels in the posterior pole, and a white and elevated lesion adjacent to vascular changes. We report a case of idiopathic macular telangiectasia and epiretinal membrane that occurs concomitantly. To our knowledge, this is the first report that describes an association between idiopathic macular telangiectasia and epiretinal membrane formation.

ABSTRACT

A 45-year-old man presented with post-traumatic aniridia. We describe the combined surgery done to treat both aniridia and epiretinal membrane simultaneously. A combined aniridia intraocular lens and vitreoretinal surgery was done. The case report highlights the advantage of combined surgery in terms of cost factor and surgical time.

ABSTRACT

Epiretinal membranes are cellular sheets on the retinal surface that are formed due to varied etiologies. We present two observational case reports to demonstrate the transretinal migration of the retinal pigment epithelium in pigmented idiopathic epiretinal membranes using optical coherence tomography.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To demonstrate optical coherence tomography efficacy to evaluate macular anatomical outcomes, in eyes with silicone oil-filled vitreous cavity after vitrectomy. METHODS: A descriptive observational study of 28 (twenty-eight) patients submitted to pars plana vitrectomy having silicone oil as vitreous substitute. The macular findings were observed by means of indirect binocular ophthalmoscope, biomicroscopy and optical coherence tomography examinations. RESULTS: During the follow-up period the retina remained attached in all patients. In some cases, intraretinal cysts, epiretinal membrane and lamellar macular hole were observed only by optical coherence tomography examination. CONCLUSION: Optical coherence tomography provided improved imaging of finer retinal structures in eyes with silicone oil-filled vitreous cavity. Therefore, optical coherence tomography examination should be systematically performed in eyes filled with silicone oil to recognize changes in retinal morphology.
